Who We Are?

Our History

Millhouse Institute (the Institute) was established in 1927 on land purchased from George Hoyland of Hoyland Umbrella Works for One Hundred Pounds.

The Institute is situated at Manchester Road, Millhouse Green in the township of Thurlstone within the civil parish of Penistone.

The Governing Document of the Institute is a Deed of Conveyance, dated 13 October 1952  between Thomas Henry Hinchliff and Arnold Goldthorpe, and the original Trustees appointed on that date.

The Rule Book is a summary of the provisions of the Deed of Conveyance, and amendments made to the Rules and Regulations passed in subsequent years.

The objectives of the Institute are to provide premises for the benefit of the inhabitants of Millhouse Green and other communities in the vicinity in order to organize and participate in sports activities, recreation, entertainment and activities related to social and intellectual development.

The general management and control of the Institute is vested in a Committee of not more than eighteen members of whom twelve members shall be  elected at each Annual General Meeting. The Deed of Conveyance provides for six organizations listed in Schedule One each to appoint one member at the annual appointment of members. At the present time, only the three religious institutions, namely Thurlstone Parish Church, Thurlstone Methodist Church and Bullhouse Independent Chapel are still in existence.

The  twelve elected members of the Committee represent local organizations and residents of the village.

In addition to the members of the Committee appointed and elected, the Committee shall have the power to co-opt not more than three members.

In the event of a  casual vacancy arising from the death, resignation or removal of a member of the Committee, the Committee shall have the power to fill such a vacancy until the next Annual General Meeting.

The Committee may from time to time alter the Rules and Regulations for the conduct of its business.

There shall be an Annual General Meeting (AGM) convened by the Committee in the month of October in each year with notice of one week. If in any year an AGM is not held in October the AGM for that year shall be convened as soon as practical afterwards.

Notice of the meeting shall be posted in the Institute and other conspicuous place or places in the village.

The AGM shall be open to all inhabitants of Millhouse Green.

Ownership of the Institute premises and land is vested in the Trustees who hold the property in trust for the benefit of the inhabitants

of Millhouse Green.

The number of Trustees shall be not less than two and not more than four.

The power to appoint a New Trustee or New Trustees shall be vested in the surviving Trustees.
